Künker sale 294, lot 4398

This specimen was lot 4398 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €115 (about US$155 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"WELTKRIEG UND INFLATION, 3 Mark 1923, E. Winz. Kratzer, polierte Platte. (Germany, Weimar republic, three mark of 1923. Minor scratches, proof.)"

This coin is an aluminum three mark from a type issued 1923 only from six mints, including Muldenhutten (mintmark "E"). Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of two mark and up were permitted for the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design. Soon after this issue, the German mark collapsed completely, destroying the savings of the German middle class and radicalizing it.

Recorded mintage: 2,060,000 + 2,291 proofs.

Specification: 2.03 g, aluminum.

Catalog reference: J. 303. KM 29.
