Steve Album sale 38, lot 3866
Fiji SA38-3866r.jpg

This specimen was lot 3866 in Stephen Album sale 38 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2020), where it sold for $59.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "FIJI: Republic, penny, 1936, one-year type of Edward VIII, bright luster, a superb example! NGC graded MS66." The type became one year only when the king abdicated in December 1936. Readily available and affordable, it remains a popular souvenir of that brief reign. Pennies were also struck for George V in 1936 and are actually scarcer (KM 2). Fiji converted to decimal coinage in 1969.

Recorded mintage: 120,000.

Specification: copper-nickel, 26 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-6
