Jean Elsen sale 159, lot 663

This specimen was lot 663 in Jean Elsen sale 159 (Brussels, June 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description^[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Charles le Téméraire (1467-1477), AR double gros vierlander, 1468-1474, Louvain. D/ Armes de Bourgogne en plein champ. R/ Croix longue cantonnée de deux lis et de deux lions, un lion en coeur. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Charles the Rash, 1467-77, silver double gros, circa 1468-74, Louvain mint. Obverse: arms of Burgundy in a plain field; reverse: long cross cantonned with two lilies and two lions, a lion at the center. very fine.)"

Charles the Rash was killed in battle in 1477, leaving a daughter, Mary. Her marriage to Maximilian of Austria brought the Hapsburgs to Brabant.
