Sincona sale 31, lot 222

This specimen was lot 222 in Sincona sale 31 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 420 CHF (about US$499 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "FRENCH PROTECTORATE | Reign of Muhammed al-Nasr Bey (1324-1340ah/1906-1922ce) 2 francs 1918ce/1337ah AR R Fdc." This type was struck 1907-21 in the name of Muhammad al-Nasir Bey, a French puppet. Some dates are readily available but this one is rare. The French left in 1956 and in 1957 a republic was established, ousting the discredited monarchy.

Recorded mintage: 303.

Specification: 10 g, .835 fine silver, .266 troy oz ASW, this specimen 9.94 g.

Catalog reference: Gad 91, KM 225.
