Sincona sale 26, lot 3158

This specimen was lot 3158 in Sincona sale 26 (Zürich, October 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"2. Republik, 1848-1852 5 Francs 1850. K, Bordeaux. Sehr schön. Kl. Schrötlingsfehler. (France, second republic, five francs of 1850, Bordeaux mint, very fine, light hairlines.)"

This type is commonly called the the "Cérès head" and was struck 1849-51 at Paris, Bordeaux and Strasbourg. It is common in circulated condition tho this is a scarce date. It was officially withdrawn from circulation in 1928 and demonetized in 2005 but ceased to circulate after World War One.

Recorded mintage: 332,179[2].

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, .7234 troy oz AGW, 37 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Eugene-André Oudiné (1810-87), this specimen 24.75 g.
