Sincona sale 66, lot 1859

This specimen was lot 1859 in Sincona sale 66 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 1,400 CHF (about US$1,843 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HEILIGES ROMISCH REICH, Joseph II. 1765-1790. 2 Souverain d'or 1784 A, Wien. Seltener Jahrgang. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Austria, Joseph II, 1765-90, double souverain d'or of 1784, Vienna mint, Rare date, Very fine-extremely fine.)"

This type is filed under the Austrian Netherlands, an area which is now Belgium and Luxembourg. Besides Brussels, similar coins are known from Vienna, Günzburg, Kremnitz, Milan and Hall. The type was struck 1781-89 and previous souverains d'or date back to the reign of Maria Theresa.
