Heritage sale 3037, lot 30384
Utrecht H3037-30384r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30384 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $1,175. The catalog description[1] noted, "Utrecht. Provincial Ducaton (Silver Rider) 1668 MS62 NGC. Incredibly attractive, with expansive surfaces that showcase light-gray patina and golden-amber highlights throughout. Absolutely mint-state, with nicely-rendered devices and a fantastically illustrative design featuring the widely-popular armored rider atop a horse. Scarce at virtually any level, but particularly rare and highly-coveted in mint-state." This specimen is one of a type issued for the province of Utrecht 1659-76; this date is noted as common. Each province of the Netherlands issued its own coins; besides Utrecht, there are coins for Deventer, Friesland, Gelderland, Groningen, Holland, Overijssel, West Friesland and Zeeland, not counting various local issues. The Netherlands were swallowed up in Napoleon's empire and after his fall, reconstituted as a kingdom.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 32.78 g, 0.941 fine silver, .991 troy oz ASW, obliquely reeded edge.

Catalog reference: Dav-4937, KM 46.1.
