Stephen Album sale 50, lot 882

This specimen was lot 882 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK: Frederik III, 1648-1670, 1/4 specie daler, 1648, struck for the Coronation of Frederik II, weakly struck portrait as usual, XF, ex Dr. Robert A. Rosenfeld Collection." While flinging largesse to the crowd was a common practice of many monarchs, only in Scandinavia were special coins struck for the purpose. This one was issued on the death of Christian IV and the accession of Frederik III. It was accompanied by one-twelfth and one quarter speciedaler in silver and half, one and double ducats in gold. All are scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: 9.308 g, 0.881 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-161.
