This specimen was lot 21328 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $998.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "POLAND. 50 Groszy, 1923. PCGS PROOF-66 CAMEO Secure Holder. The finest graded example to receive the CAMEO designation at PCGS. Incomparable quality, with effusive luster and a sharp crisp strike, much as would be expected for this PROOF issue." This fifty groszy of 1923 was accompanied by one grosz, two grosze, five, ten and twenty groszy, all common in circulated condition. The proofs are rare. The grosz is descended from the German groschen which is in turn is cognate to the French gros, the Italian grosso and the English groat. Poland lost her independence in 1939, not to regain it until the collapse of Communism in 1989.

Recorded mintage: 100,000,000 plus 10 proofs.

Specification: 5 g, nickel, 23 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-Y-13; Parchimowicz-118d.
