This type was struck in nickel at the Bern mint 1881-1938, then converted to copper-nickel for 1939, which alloy is still in use as of 2024. The "B" mintmark was deleted for 1970-85. Prior to confederation in 1850, each Swiss canton issued its own coins.

Recorded mintage: 10,289,000 plus 10,000 proofs.

Specification: 4 g, copper-nickel, 21.05 mm diameter, plain edge.
