This specimen was lot 174 in UBS sale 85 (Zurich, September 2010), where it sold for 2000 CHF (about US$2281 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DÄNEMARK, Königreich, Frederik III. 1648-1670. Speciesdaler 1650. Mzm. Henrik Köhler. Gekröntes, geharnischtes Brustbild mit langen Haaren nach rechts. Rv. Gekröntes Wappen, umgeben von Ordenskette. Sehr schön-gutes sehr schön." (Kingdom of Denmark, Frederick III, 1648-70, speciedaler of 1650; Henrik Kohler, mintmaster. Crowned, armored bust with long hair to right; reverse: crowned arms, eleven shields around. Very Fine-Good Very Fine)
Danish crowns of the seventeenth century range from the scarce to the obscenely rare. Either they were melted extensively or the poverty of the king prevented large issues or both. This type is not the most expensive but still runs five times the price of a contemporary thaler from Brunswick or Saxony.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 29.23 g, 0.875 fine silver, .822 troy oz ASW, this specimen 28,59 g.
