This specimen was lot 22355 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $180. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1785-A. Louis XVI (1774-92). PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, Unc Details Secure Holder. Mostly sharp with some visible adjustment marks over the uniformed portion of the bust. From the Keystone Collection. Ex: Coin Galleries auction, August 7, 1985, Lot #847."

Recorded mintage: 571,000[1].

Specification: Silver, 0.917 fine, 29.49 g, 40-42 mm diameter.

Design:

  • Obverse: uniformed and peruked bust of Louis XVI facing left, legend LUD XVI D. G. FR. ET NAV. REX. (Louis XVI, by the grace of God, king of France and Navarre).
  • Reverse: oval arms of France, crowned, with olive branches around, legend SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTUM 1789. Edge engraved, "DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM," Latin for "God save the king." The mintmark ("K" for Bordeaux) is at the bottom, between "DOMINI" and "BENEDICTUM."
