Sincona sale 85, lot 1748

This specimen was lot 1748 in Sincona sale 86 (Zurich, October 2023), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$404 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Elizabeth II. 1952-2022. Proof Half Sovereign 1999, Royal Mint Llantrisant. Fourth bust. Selten. Nur 1'903 Sets erstellt, Mit Originaletui und Zertifikat. Rare. Only 1,903 sets assembled. NGC PF70 ULTRA CAMEO. With original box and certificate. No. 87 of 1,903 sets."

The half sovereign was obsolete as a circulating coin after World War One but is still struck as a bullion coin. This type was struck in modest numbers 1998-2008 but no date is rare, all being in collectors' hands.

Recorded mintage: 1,903 sets, presumably packaged with the sovereign.

Specification: 3.99 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 3.99 g.

Catalog reference: KM 1001, Hill 544R. Spink SB4. Fr-455.
