Sincona sale 83, lot 3402

This specimen was lot 3402 in Sincona sale 83 (Zurich, May 2023), where did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"OSTERREICH, Franz I. 1745-1765. 5 Dukaten 1745, Wien. Geharnischtes Brustbild nach rechts mit Lorbeerkranz, umgelegtem Mantel und der Kette vom Goldenen Vlies. Rv. Gekrönter Doppeladler mit Schwert, Zepter und Reichsapfel in den Fängen, auf der Brust gekröntes, zweifeldiges Wappen. Äusserst selten. Sehr schön. Kleine eingeritzte Wertzahl "V" (Austria, Franics I, 1745-65, five ducats of 1745, Vienna mint. Obverse: armored, laureate and mantled bust right, with the Order of the Golden Fleece; reverse: crowned doubleheaded eagle with sword, scepter and orb in its claws, a crowned bifold shield on its breast. Extremely rare, Very fine, Small engraved "V").

Dieses Stück wird in der Literatur der Münzstätte Wien zugeschrieben, auch wenn die Signaturen "I-E "und "AS" in der neueren Literatur nicht eindeutig beschrieben werden. So findet man Zuordnungen wie I-E = Joseph Käschnitz von Weinberg (Münzmeister in Wien 1741-1752 ) und AS = Antonio Schnabel (siehe Miller zu Aichholz, Seite 246) (This piece is assigned to the Vienna Mint in the literature, even if the initials "I-E" and "AS" are not clearly described in more recent literature. One finds attributions such as I-E = Joseph Käschnitz von Weinberg (mintmaster in Vienna 1741-1752) and AS = Antonio Schnabel (see Miller zu Aichholz, page 246).)"

The five ducat denomination was struck only on special occasion, such as the coronation of Francis I as Holy Roman Emperor. A five ducats with the bust of Maria Theresia (KM 1728) was also struck in 1745.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 17.50 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 17.22 g.

Catalog reference: KM 1729, Herinek 2. Eypeltauer 602, Fr-422.
