Jean Elsen sale 151, lot 1780

This specimen was lot 1780 in Jean Elsen sale 151 (Brussels, June 2022), where it sold for €460 (about US$575 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SUISSE, GENEVE, Ville, AR 12 sols, 1603. D/ Ecu de la ville sous une aigle éployée. R/ Dans le champ: POVR/ XII/ SOLS. Rare. presque Très Beau. (Switzerland, canton of Geneva, silver twelve sols of 1603. Obverse: city arms below an eagle displayed; reverse: value in field. Rare, about Very Fine.)"

The early coinage of Geneva is rare. The SCWC notes that one thaler was twelve florins and 9 sols. This type is listed for 1602-03.
