India 1944-L 2 annas

Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 57212

This specimen was lot 57212 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $168. The catalog description^[1] noted, "INDIA. 2 Annas, 1944-L. Lahore Mint. George VI. NGC MS-61. " The two annas, originally a silver coin (KM 515), was switched to copper-nickel in 1918 and struck for George V until 1936. Similar two annas were struck for George VI until 1947. This subtype was struck 1942-44. The administration also attempted to circulate copper-nickel four and eight annas but failed. The Lahore mint, now in Pakistan, was opened during the war to assist Bombay and Calcutta.
