This specimen was part of lot 27235 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), which sold for $317.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Federal Republic Two Proof Sets 1950-1965-G & 1966-G, Each set contains eight coins, Pfennig to 5 Mark. All coins are choice. The 1950/1965 set is an unusual mixture of these two dates as issued by the government." The five mark was the largest denomination in West Germany from its introduction in 1951 until the first ten mark was issued in 1972. In 1975 the coin was converted to copper-nickel plated nickel and silver ceased to be minted for circulation. The five mark was also used for various commemoratives tho none were issued in 1965. The Karlsruhe mint mark was "G".
Recorded mintage: 2,335,000 plus 8,233 proofs.
Specification: 11.2 g, .625 fine silver, 29 mm diameter, lettered edge, .225 troy oz ASW.
