This specimen was lot 25953 in Heritage sale 3032 (Chicago, April 2014), where it sold for $1,116.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Alexander I Dinar 1897, MS66 PCGS, greatly appealing silver and magenta toning. Nearly as struck for this one-year rarity." This franc-sized coin was struck at Paris during the brief existence of the kingdom of Serbia (1878-1918). It is common thru extremely fine. Serbia was conquered and occupied by the Austrians during World War One but reemerged after the war as the kingdom of Yugoslavia. The monarchy was overthrown by Nazi occupation in 1940 and Yugoslavia was reconstituted as a republic under Communist rule in 1945.
