This specimen was lot 31033 in Heritage auction 3096 (Dallas, TX, March 2021), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "Egypt: Arab Republic gold "Aswan Dam" 5 Pounds AH 1379 (1960) MS63+ NGC. Abundant with luster, this strongly struck representative celebrates the construction of the Aswan Dam across the Nile. Accompanied by a UBS auction tag. From the Paramount Collection." After Nasser seized power in 1958, he attempted to merge Egypt with Syria as first step in creating a unified Arab League. After the western powers refused to help him build the Aswan Dam, he turned to the Soviet Union for assistance. His death in 1970 ended the Syrian alliance as Anwar Sadat seized power.
