The modern nation of Greece obtained independence from Ottoman Turkey in 1833. It functioned as a monarchy from that year until 1925 and again from 1935-1974. Coins from these periods often feature a crown as part of the design. Today the country is the Hellenic Republic of Greece. The coin shown is an silver twenty drachmai of a type struck 1960 and 1965. The obverse features the portrait of King Paul I (1947-64). It was accompanied by fifty lepta (KM 80), one (KM 81), two (KM 82) and five drachmai (KM 83).
Recorded mintage: 20,000,000 plus a few rare proofs.
Specification: 7.5 g, 0.835 fine silver, 23.2 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 85.
