The modern nation of Greece obtained independence from Ottoman Turkey in 1833. It functioned as a monarchy from that year until 1925 and again from 1935-1974. Coins from these periods often feature a crown as part of the design. Today the country is the Hellenic Republic of Greece. The coin shown is an copper-nickel one drachma of a type struck 1954-65. This is the most common date. The obverse features the portrait of King Paul I (1947-64). It was accompanied by fifty lepta (KM 80), two (KM 82), five (KM 83) and twenty drachmai (KM 85).
