The minting of copper twenty réis or vintém began with in 1693 and continued steadily thru the eighteenth century. This specimen was lot 473 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $3,818.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 20 Reis, 1751. Rio de Janeiro Mint. Jose I (1750-77). Partial weak strike due to die deterioration. Scarce date. Attractive. BOLD VERY FINE." This specimen was struck at the Rio mint for Brazil in 1751-52. Many were countermarked in 1809 to raise their value to forty réis. Counterfeits are numerous but are collected alongside the genuine issues.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: copper.
