Heritage sale 397, lot 12380

This specimen was lot 12380 in Heritage sale 397 (New York, January 2006), where it sold for $805. The catalog description[1] noted, "Jose I gold 6400 Reis 1778R, AU58 PCGS, tiny planchet lamination in the right obverse field. This date is not listed in the SCWC or in Russo, and would be a posthumous striking by one year since Jose died in 1777. Very unusual and certainly of interest to Brazilian experts." The listed dates comprise 1751-77 for the Rio mint.

Recorded mintage: 378,000 (for the Maria and Pedro III type).

Specification: 14.34 g, 0.917 fine gold, .423 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 172.2.
