Newfoundland 1940 10 cents

from the Stack's Bowers 2018 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70364

This specimen was lot 70364 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $288. The catalog description^[1] noted, "CANADA. Newfoundland. 10 Cents, 1940. PCGS MS-64 Secure Holder. Bold and flashy satiny surfaces with areas of tangerine toning. A lovely example with good eye appeal." It is a fairly common date of a type struck 1938-44. it has the same design as the ten cent pieces of 1945-47 but is 0.925 fine silver. Newfoundland was admitted into the Dominion of Canada in 1949 and her separate coinage ceased. As a class, Newfoundland coinage is scarcer than equivalent Canadian coinage but collector demand for it is lower so it is often cheaper.
