Great Britain 1844 sovereign

Sincona sale 51, lot 25439

This specimen was lot 2539 in Sincona sale 51 (Zurich, October 2018), where it sold for 800 CHF (about US$965 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"Victoria, 1837-1901. Sovereign 1844, London. Young head. Small 44 in date. PCGS MS62. (kingdom of Great Britain, Victoria, 1837-1901, sovereign of 1844, London mint, young head type, small 44 in date, uncirculated.)"

This bust was used on the sovereign, or one pound coin, 1838-64 with a slightly modified type (KM 736.2) extending until 1874.

Recorded mintage: 3,000,000.

Specification: 7.98 g, 0.917 fine gold, .235 troy oz AGW.
