This specimen was lot 601 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $2,115. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Bavaria. 2 Taler, 1848. NGC Unc Details--Surface Hairlines. Very scarce. Commemorating the abdication of Ludwig I for Maximilian. Faint hairlines. Toned with sharp details. From the Rockaway Collection." When the convention thaler (28.06 g) was superseded by the vereinsthaler (18.52 g) in the 1830's, the thaler was abandoned for commemoratives in favor of the double thaler (37.12 g). Bavaria issued four double thalers in 1848, of which this abdication commemorative is the rarest.
Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.
Specification: 37.12 g, 0.900 fine silver, lettered edge.
