This silver 1200 réis was minted 1834-47 in Rio de Janeiro. The series came accompanied by 100 réis, 200 réis, 400 réis and 800 réis in silver. The 1200 réis had the same specification as the old 960 réis last minted in 1833. This specimen was lot 20401 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $546.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pedro II 1200 Reis 1840 4/3, AVF, cleaned with numerous small surface marks, scarce low mintage date." For the paltry mintage recorded in the SCWC, this coin is awarded a premium of only double the common date (1834).
Recorded mintage: 633.
Specification: 26.89 g, 0.917 fine silver, .792 troy oz ASW.
