Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 41493
SB0123-41493r.jpg

This specimen was lot 41493 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Magdeburg. 2/3 Taler, 1674-CP. Free City. PCGS Genuine--Corrosion Removed, EF Details." The gulden or two-thirds thaler suddenly became very popular in the 1670's and many north German states struck them. This gulden was issued 1674-75 by the city, not the bishop, as evidenced by the absence of the bishop's portrait. Other gulden issued at this time include KM 313, 316, 317.1, 317.2. The town and the bishopric were annexed to Brandenburg in 1680.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-638; KM-315.
