This specimen was lot 70412 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[1] noted, "BULGARIA. 2 Stotinki, 1912. Kremnica Mint. Ferdinand I. PCGS MS-65 Red Brown Gold Shield. KM-23.2. Quite lustrous and radiant, this Gem offers a good deal of original red remaining along with glistening brilliance." Bulgaria fought a protracted war against the Ottomans, culminating in liberation from the latter's rule in 1878. The new Bulgarian state was quite weak, however, and new conflicts drew it into the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913, along with Serbia and Greece, once again against the Ottomans in Turkey. This one-year type was struck for Bulgaria and is common.
Recorded mintage: 40,000,000.
Specification: bronze.
Catalog reference: KM 23.2.
