This specimen was lot 33515 in Heritage sale 3082 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "China: People's Republic gold Panda 200 Yuan (1/2 oz) 2002 MS68 NGC." The Chinese government has, since the mid 1980's, produced a mind boggling array of bullion related collectibles. A complete set is thousands of types yet buyers clamor for more. This one features the panda, one of a series first issued in 1983. In 2001, each size was given a new denomination; the half ounce gold panda went from fifty yuan to 200 yuan as shown here.
Recorded mintage: 26,514.
Specification: 15.55 g, .999 fine gold, 0.500 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: KM 1459, PAN-350A.
