This specimen was lot 9484 in Ponterio sale 151 (Baltimore, November 2009), where it sold for $1495. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "GUATEMALA. 8 Reales, 1747-J. Full four-digit date, both mint marks, clear assayer's letter and king's ordinal. Quite nice for issue. VERY FINE." Guatemalan cobs are unusual in that they were struck using pillar dies. This specimen was lot 9484 in Ponterio sale 151 (Baltimore, November 2009), where it sold for $1495. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUATEMALA. 8 Reales, 1747-J. Full four-digit date, both mint marks, clear assayer's letter and king's ordinal. Quite nice for issue. VERY FINE." Guatemalan cobs are unusual in that they were struck using pillar dies. Guatemala issues are notably cruder than other mints. Conventional milled coinage was introduced in 1754.
