from the Stack's Bowers June 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71592
SB621-71592r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71592 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "HONG KONG. 5 Cents, 1905-H. Heaton Mint. PCGS MS-66 Gold Shield. KM-12. Presenting an incredible tone on each side, this minor will certainly entertain the eye of the lover of exotic color. A seafoam green and amber nature is noted on the obverse, while a ring of burnt sienna and cobalt dominates the reverse." Hong Kong was seized by the British from China in 1842 and held by them until its return in 1997. In Hong Kong, 100 cents = one dollar; sterling coinage was never used there. This type was struck 1903-05. The next issue would be in 1932.

Recorded mintage: 7,000,000.

Specification: 1.36 g, 0.800 fine silver, 15.2 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-12.
