This specimen was lot 23434 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $930. The catalog description[1] noted, "EGYPT. 50 Pounds, 1993. PCGS PROOF-69 Deep Cameo. Depiction of the burial mask of Tut Ankh-Amen. A brilliant proof with hard mirrored fields and frosted cameo devices." This type was issued in 1993 along with numerous other NCLT's such as KM 756 (Cleopatra), KM 775 (pyramids), KM 776 (sphinx), KM 777 (Ramses II), etc. Friedberg renumbered the Egyptian gold coins in the 9th edition and, in the process, lumped all the two dozen issues of the Art Treasures series of 1993-94 under Fr-258, rendering the Friedberg number useless for attribution. We have resorted to the KM number instead.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 8.5 g, 0.900 fine gold.
Catalog reference: Fr-258 (formerly Fr-170); KM-755.
