SB821-46012r.jpg

This specimen was lot 46012 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $95. The catalog description[1] noted, "SCOTLAND. Bawbee, ND (1538-42). Edinburgh Mint. James V. NGC VF Details--Environmental Damage. Third Coinage. Sharp and appealing despite a fine roughness associated with soil exposure. Well centered with unusually complete outer beaded borders. A natural flan flaw descends from the obverse edge at 1 o'clock. Pleasing for this billon issue. From the Loch Ness Collection." In the second half of the seventeenth century, the bawbee was sixpence Scots or half an English penny. The weight of this specimen is about right for an English threepence.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver or billon, this specimen 1.79 g.

Catalog reference: S-5383.
