This specimen was lot 24453 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $1,292.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic 1/2 Peso 1944, MS64 NGC, a choice example of this key low mintage date with full icy white mint brilliance and minimal contact marks on the Indian bust side. Rarely seen in this superior quality." The specimen shown was struck for the Dominican Republic during the early years of the regime of Rafael Trujillo, among the more brutal of Latin America's long roll of bloodthirsty dictators. Soon after his assassination in 1961, the capital, which he had renamed Ciudad Trujillo, reverted to its former name, Santo Domingo. The type was struck 1937-61; this date is scarce in uncirculated but otherwise common.

Recorded mintage: 100,000.

Specification: 12.5 g, .900 fine silver, 30.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 21.
