This specimen was lot 20392 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $2,232.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos III gold 8 Escudos 1785-JJ Nuevo Reino, AU53 NGC, an attractive example with abundant mint luster and no adjustment marks or laminations." This type was struck 1772-89 at Bogotá and Popayán and is perhaps the most common Spanish colonial gold coin. In 1785, the purity was reduced from .901 to .875 fine.
