This specimen was lot 73569 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $115. The catalog description[1] noted, "MAURITIUS. 1/4 Rupee, 1971. PCGS SPECIMEN-67 Gold Shield. Steely gray and incredibly vibrant, this radiant specimen is clearly one of the finest which one will encounter. Rather unsurprisingly, PCGS has graded just one higher. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." This type was struck 1960, 1964-65, 1970-71, 1975 and 1978. It has a low catalog value and only the King's Norton mint provenance saved this specimen from being tossed into a junk box.
Recorded Mintage: 540,000 plus 750 proofs.
Specification: 2.95 g, copper-nickel, 19 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-36.
