This specimen was part of lot 43183 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Pence to 4 Pence Maundy Set (4 Pieces), 1965. All CHOICE UNCIRCULATED. Fully lustrous with attractive toning, which generally darkens with the higher denominations. Ex: B. A. Seaby, Ltd." Since medieval times, the monarch or her representative has handed out Maundy sets to the poor on Maundy Thursday. When the tradition began, silver pennies, tuppence, threepence and groats were circulating coins but are now long since obsolete. Silver pennies have not been struck for circulation since the reign of George III.

Recorded mintage: 1,221.

Specification: 1.89 g, .925 fine silver, 18 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 902, S-4131; KM-MDS224 (set).
