This specimen was lot 4604 in Sincona sale 4 (Zurich, October 2011), where it sold for 5,800 CHF (about US$7,716 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Kaiserreich Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha, Herzogtum Münzstätte Berlin Ernst II. 1844-1893. 20 Mark 1886. Fast vorzüglich-vorzüglich. (Germany, Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Ernest II, 1844-93, twenty mark of 1886, Berlin mint. Extremely fine to nice extremely fine.)"
This type was struck 1886 only and is rare. This coin is the second gold issue of this ruler, who also emitted two and five mark coins in silver. The earlier twenty mark of 1872 features a different reverse and is very rare. This is a product of the Berlin mint.
Recorded mintage: 20,000 plus some proofs.
Specification: 7.96 g, .900 fine gold, .230 troy oz AGW.
