JEan Elsen sale 117, lot 1430
Flanders 1557 daalder rev JElsen 117-1430.jpg

This specimen was lot 1430 in Jean Elsen sale 117 (Brussels, June 2013), where it sold for €500 (about US$788 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Philips II (1555-1598), AR Philipsdaalder, 1557, Brugge. Met titel van koning van Engeland. Droit: Geharnast bb. radié. Met PHS in de leg. Revers: Gekroond wapenschild op een Bourgondisch kruis tussen twee vuurijzers. Zeer Fraai à Prachtig. (county of Flanders, Philip II (1555-98), silver Philipsdaalder of 1557, Bruges mint, with the title of king of England. Obverse: armored bust; reverse: crowned arms on a Burgundian cross between two jewels. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

Flanders, along with several other Dutch provinces, issued daalders during the sixteenth century. This issue bears Philip II's name. Several varieties exist for 1557; this one abbreviates the king's name as "PHS."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 34,31 g.

Catalog reference: G.H., 210-7c; Haeck, 652; Delm-35, Davenport-8645.
