Honan Province in the south east of China began coin production in 1647. A mint for struck coinage began operation in 1905.

The specimen shown was lot 60181 in Ponterio sale 162 (Hong Kong, August 2011), where it sold for $16,730. The catalog description[1] noted, “CHINA. Hunan. 10 Cash Pattern, ND (1902). 湖南省造光緒元寶當十黃銅元樣幣。EXTREMELY RARE Hunan 10 Cash Pattern. EXTREMELY RARE. Attractive brown surfaces. 鄭仁傑《中國銅元鑑賞》珍稀度評級為最罕見的第一級。巧克力色包漿。NGC AU-58 BN..”
