This specimen was lot 71423 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Passau. 1/8 Taler, 1764. Leopold Ernst Joseph. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. Homage Commemorative. A lovely well preserved example with rich old cabinet tone over lustrous surfaces." This very scarce one year type was accompanied by a quarter thaler (KM 86). The Bishopric of Passau, between Bavaria and Austria, struck a few thalers in the eighteenth century, all now rare. The state fell to Bavaria during the Napoleonic upheavals and is now part of Germany.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
Catalog reference: KM-84.
