Great Britain 1916 penny

from the Stack's Bowers 2020 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70855

This specimen was lot 70855 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, February 2020), where it sold for $120. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, 1916. London Mint. PCGS MS-65 Red Gold Shield. A near flawless British copper that is brilliant red with major eye appeal." This type was struck in large numbers 1911-26 and worn specimens fill dealer junk boxes. A slightly modified bust was used 1927-36.

Recorded mintage: 86,411,000, a common date.
