Sincona sale 59, lot 1138

This specimen was lot 1138 in Sincona sale 59 (Zürich, October 2019), where it sold for 2,400 CHF (about US$2,907 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DENMARK, Christian IX. 1863-1906. 2 Rigsdaler 1872, Kopenhagen. Prachtexemplar. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. FDC. (kingdom of Denmark, Christian IX, 1863-1906, double rigsdaler of 1872, Copenhagen mint. Cabinet piece, Very rare in this condition. Uncirculated.)"

This specimen was offered again as lot 162 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it did not sell. Danish currency endured several "reforms" in the nineteenth century. After the reform of 1854, the monetary system was 96 skillings = one rigsdaler, 2 rigsdaler = one (old) speciedaler. This type is listed for 1864, 1868 and 1871-72. In 1874, the coinage was reformed again to the current system of 100 øre = one krone.

Recorded mintage: 149,000.

Specification: 28.89 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen 28.88 g.

Catalog reference: KM 772.2, Hede 4B. Dav-79.
