Sincona sale 38, lot 1322

This specimen was lot 1322 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 7,000 CHF (about US$8,395 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"I. Kaiserreich. Napoleon I. 1804-1815 40 Francs 1808 U. Turin. Äusserst selten. Nur 346 Exemplare geprägt. Sehr schön. (First Empire, Napoleon I, 1804-15, forty francs of 1808, Turin mint. Extremely rare, Only 346 pieces struck, Very fine.)"

While the 1808-A and 1808-H are fairly common, the 1808-M, 1808-U (struck in Turin, Italy) and 1808-W are all rare. The type was struck 1807-08 only.

Recorded mintage: 346.

Specification: 12.90 g, 0.900 fine gold, 26 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre-Joseph Tiolier and Jean-Pierre Droz, this specimen 12.86 g.
