In 2008, the mint completed its series of fifty state quarters to near-universal acclaim (some of the designs can only be described as inept). In 2009, the program was extended a year to include the territories and possessions while the mint debated what to do next. Congress, eager to promote tourism in home districts, was not eager to return to the drab eagle reverse, so, after much discussion, a series called America the Beautiful was introduced wherein each state selected a national park or monument within her boundaries to be featured. The Northern Mariana islands selected the American Memorial Park. Other quarters for 2019 included the Lowell NHP, War in the Pacific NHP, River of No Return Wilderness and the San Antonio Missions NHP. Numista comments, "The American Memorial Park in the Northern Mariana Islands honors the thousands of American troops and local residents of Saipan, the second-largest island in the Northern Mariana Islands, who sacrificed their lives during the Marianas Campaign of World War II."
