Sincona sale 91, lot 3649

This specimen was lot 3649 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 2,000 CHF (about US$2,643 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Zürich, Stadt und Kanton, Vierteldukat 1702, Zürich. Sehr selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Flaue und unregelmässige Prägung auf Avers. (Switzerland, canton of Zürich, quarter ducat of 1702, Zürich mint. Very rare, Very fine-extremely fine, Weak and irregular striking on obverse.)"

This rare issue is represented in the SCWC by two catalog numbers, KM 117 (shown here) and KM 118 (oval arms). This example is so crude that one might take it for a counterfeit.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.875 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 0.82 g.

Catalog reference: KM 117, Hürlimann 344, D.T. 413b (very rare), HMZ 2-1163b, Fr-468.
