Sincona sale 6, lot 1751

This specimen was lot 1751 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 6,250 CHF (about US$7,691 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LETTLAND Karl XI. von Schweden 1660-1697. Taler 1660, Riga. Brustbild nach rechts. Rv. Torburg mit den gekreuzten Schlüsseln, darüber hält eine Hand aus Wolken Krone, unter dem Torgitter gekrönter Löwenkopf. Dünne Kr. Schöne Patina. Fast vorzüglich. (Latvia, Charles XI of Sweden, 1660-97, thaler of 1660, Riga mint. Obverse: bust to right; reverse: city gate with pennants flying from the towers, crossed keys above, at top the Hand of God holds a crown, below a lion's head. Nice patina, choice extremely fine.)"

The Swedish rulers of Livonia (now Latvia) issued a variety of thalers for Riga in the seventeenth century, all rare. This one varies from the otherwise identical Dav-A4596 by having single pennants flapping from the towers.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver; this specimen is 28,59 g.

Catalog reference: S.B. 92a, Neumann 53, Dav-4596, KM 56.2.
