This specimen was lot 1415 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 2,000 (about US$2,635 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"5 Gulden 1835. Darmstadt. Vorzüglich. (grand duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt, five gulden of 1835, extremely fine.)"
This type of 1835 and 1840-42 is scarce to rare. Hesse struck coinage to the unified empire standard after 1871.
Recorded mintage: 22,000 for 1835-42.
Specification: 3.42 g, .904 fine gold, .099 troy oz AGW, this specimen 3.39 g.
