This specimen was lot 1308 in Sincona sale 79 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 650 CHF (about US$779 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich, George III. 1760-1820. Guinea 1781, London. Fourth laureate head. NGC VF Details. Cleaned." This type was struck 1774-86 and is the first really common type for George III. By this time, the mint had ceased to produce anything but gold coins and Maundy sets, causing a grave shortage of circulating media. Guineas were superseded by sovereigns during the reform of 1817.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 8.35 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 8.24 g.
Catalog reference: KM 604, Spink 3728, Bull 700, Fr-355.
